Visioning Care: A Snapshot

Since 2010, Playing ON has been working in NHS Foundation Trusts across London delivering reflective practice and experiential training for staff at Guy's & St Thomas', Camden & Islington, East London, South London & Maudsley NHS Trusts and Health Education England.

We have developed a deep and nuanced understanding of multiple perspectives within mental healthcare. By using techniques drawn from theatre making practices we have designed a model, which gets under the skin of team dynamics, unpicks serious incidents and fosters deep listening between colleagues.

Since November 2022, Playing ON has delivered Visioning Care workshops for over 300 staff members in complex mental health settings. The response has been incredibly positive, one Inpatient Occupational Therapy Lead said ‘It is a safe and non-judgmental space to reflect, which can often be difficult to obtain in everyday practice.’ While a Crisis Pathway and Specialist Teams Service Manager shared, ‘The session gave us space to be together in a creative and expressive context to work through complex issues, which we do not normally have time or energy to do.’

Measurable improvements recorded as a result of Visioning Care workshops include:

  • Improved communication between staff around mistakes

  • Ensuring support networks for staff are in place and in use

  • Improvements to the health and wellbeing of staff

  • Redesigning the décor of the waiting room
